Forget the stuff going on down the road at Stratford – the REAL Olympics were held by CAMRA today, when the annual Great British Beer Festival opened at… Olympia!

No 9 Red OutlinesAnd it was the Cumbrians of Coniston Brewing Company who wowed a packed hall by being named as the Champion Beer of Britain (CBOB) with a very “heavy” Coniston Water… No 9 weighs in at a hefty 8.5 per cent ABV!

The classic, stong, golden ale is brewed only once a year – and its long maturation period creates what Coniston – and, obviously, the CBOB judges – think is “a delightful sipping beer”.

Large amounts of Goldings hops contribute to its “marzipan, herbal hoppiness with Cognac overtones” – and as the brewery reckon the only place to savour it is the Black Bull Inn at Coniston, the Lake District is set to become even busier!
