Eco-minded UK maltsters Muntons have become the first maltings company in the world to gain the prestigious international standard for energy management.
The Suffolk-based company has also become one of the first companies in the UK to achieve the exacting ISO50001 standard which demands highly robust energy management practices and that tough energy-savings targets are met.
The certificate – which is devised by the International Standards Organisation and launched in the UK in June 2011 – follows other energy and environmental accolades awarded to the Stowmarket business in recent times.
Muntons has already been recognised as the most sustainable manufacturer in 2011 by ‘The Manufacturer’ and were placed in the top rankings in the Sunday Times Best Green Company for the last four years.
The company has saved over 12 per cent of gas and electrical energy used over the past 12 years. This has been achieved by involving staff at all levels, appointing a group energy manager and installing an energy monitoring and targeting system to capture significant energy use on their sites.
Muntons said: “In addition to the two fundamental benefits that an energy management system brings – saving money by using less energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions – there is another benefit.
“By adopting best practice as normal, you prove that your commitment is real and serious. “Measurable results that are externally verified speak volumes when dealing with legislators, customers and employees.”
