Beer experts tasted the difference in Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt 2012 – and awarded a coverted six-month shelf stint to a beer brewed with coffee and chocolate!
Batemans Mocha will now be in 300 Sainsbury’s stores after coming top out of 140 beers in the supermarket’s annual quest for the best new beers.
The Lincolnshire brewer won over first shoppers, then a panel of beer experts, with the rich smooth beer brewed with Arabica coffee and Belgian chocolate.
After being selected as one of 20 to go on sale by Sainsbury’s customers for an initial three-week run, the Mocha then made the grand final of 10 based on sales.
It was then picked as the champion by the panel at London’s Oxo Tower, which included sommelier Gerard Basset, beer sommelier Sophie Atherton and beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones.
JW Lees’ Manchester Star Ale was judged as runner-up. It will now go on sale in 100 stores for six-months.
Delighted Batemans director, Jaclyn Bateman, said: “Traditionally, we’ve always produced classic style beers, but we hope new styles of beer like Batemans Mocha will become classics of the future.”
