As Barack Obama was being returned as US President this week, real ale fans in Washington – ENGLAND – were toasting him… with his OWN White House beer!
Inventor Ken Oliver – who has built his own portable brewery, the “Beer Making Machine” – was called in to recreate the President’s own homebrew recipe, which was recently put on the Internet by White House staff.
Ken converted the measures to metric and using his home-built brewery, turned out his 5.3 per cent Honey PotUS (President of the United States) Porter at the Courtyard Café Bar at Washington Arts Centre… the ORIGINAL Washington – on Tyneside!
Ken was called in to make the historic brew, by Cheers North East magazine editor Alastair Gilmour, who said: “Ken is extremely efficient and has a really nice little kit, so we got him to brew it. It’s a really nice beer – very dark, as I expected it to be, being a porter-style beer.”
The beer wasn’t actually sold, but drinkers contributed to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation – the charity set up by the former England soccer star and manager.
And watch this space for some further ventures by ambitious Ken. They include brewing on a boat while sailing the River Tyne, following the Romans by brewing on Hadrian’s Wall and… brewing while FREEFALLING from an aircraft. Now that, we want to see!
