Cornwall’s St Austell Brewery has moved in to buy up fellow brewer Bath Ales, for an undisclosed sum. St Austell – famous for its Tribute ale – has taken over the Bath brewery itself, together with its 11 pubs, and its portfolio of beer brands.

All of Bath Ales’ beers will continue to be brewed at the Bath brewery and indeed, St Austell Brewery intends to invest in it to expand the brewing and packaging facilities.
St Austell chief exec, James Staughton said: “Bath Ales brews great beer and has a thriving pub estate, both of which complement those of St Austell Brewery, and with the acquisition, we are committing to a long-term significant investment in the Bath Ales brands, pub estate, people and brewing facilities.
“We want to build on Bath Ales’ success to date and are committing to a long-term significant investment in the Bath Ales brands, pub estate, people and brewing facilities.
“For a long time Bath Ales has been a company I have admired and this exciting acquisition provides the coming together of two like-minded businesses.”

Roger Jones, founder of Bath Ales, added: “This is a really exciting move for Bath Ales. The combined business will be a force to be reckoned with”.
St Austell is one of just 28 independent family-owned UK brewers. The company was founded in 185, and has a huge portfolio of 167 pubs throughout the South West. It has brewed some 888 MILLION pints in that time!
Bath Ales, on the other hand, was founded only in 1995, by a group of pals who worked at the old Courage Brewery in Bristol. It has had a meteoric rise and currently turns out 5m pints annually, with a turnover of nearly £16m.
