Love him or hate him, it seems you can’t knock Barack Obama’s taste in alcoholic drinks. For the American President has taken to home brewing… in his kitchen at the White House!

And in the best US traditions of openness, he’s even revealed his secret ale recipes to the nation – with complete brewing instructions for his Honey Ale and Honey Porter going up on the White House website.

A blog on the site says: “Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen.
“After the few first drafts we landed on some great recipes that came from a local brew shop. We received some tips from a couple of home brewers who work in the White House who helped us amend it and make it our own.
“To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before.
“As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there’s no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House.”
The blog then goes on to list complete recipes and directions for making the two ales, and even follows up with a five-minute video showing Obama’s kitchen staff brewing ale on the kitchen range!
The home-brew President has now gotten the bit between his teeth and his staff have come up with a third ale – a White House Honey Blonde.
And all three brews use honey taped from hives on the White House’s south lawn.
