London family brewer Fuller’s has produced its third “Past Master” ale, drawn from its historic brewing book.
The brewery has embarked on reproducing a Past Masters range of its historic ales – brewed precisely to the specifications recorded by the company, decades earlier.
The latest Past Master is the 7.3 per cent Old Burton Extra – a “rich, golden ale with a big malt character and an incredible balance of sweetness and warmth on the palate” – whose original recipe dates back to Thursday, September 10, 1931!
According to Fuller’s head brewer, John Keeling, Old Burton Extra was a “misunderstood” beer style which went out of fashion and died in the first half of the last century.
Its recipe includes two malts, maize, Fuggles and Goldings hops… plus “special brewing syrup”!
John has been helped in his recreation by the extraordinary brewing book at Fuller’s, which records the finest details of every single ale ever brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick.
Old Burton Extra is now on limited release in selected Sainsbury’s supermarkets or from Fuller’s brewery shop and the brewery’s online store.
