Cumbrian brewer Barngates of Ambleside has taken the Northwest Regional Champion Beer of Britain title, with an ale named after a moody moggie that took over a local pub for 14 years!

Cat Nap ale now goes onto the national final, hoping to be crowned the Champion Bitter of Britain 2012.

Brewer John Lloyd revealed his winner was named after stray cat Kitty – which turned up in the car park of the village’s Duck pub and then took up residence!

Barngates will be up against eight other regional winners as it bids to be Top Cat at The Great British Beer Festival at Olympia in London in August.
