Derby is once more laying claim to being Britain’s real ale capital – buoyed up by the Lonely Planet Guide, which has dubbed it “the best place to drink real ale in the world”!

In what has become an annual “beer census”, Derby’s CAMRA branch members organised eight separate pub crawls to survey every one of the city’s 73 pubs.

They found a total of 290 beers, with 176 different ales on offer – 20 more than last year – in 68 pubs, with just five pubs not serving real ale.

Ten pubs had between 10-18 beers on sale each – with Marston’s Pedigree dominating, with a presence in 40 pubs, followed by Bass in 11 and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord in 10.

No fewer than seven Derby breweries had beers on sale in the city.

The average price of a pint was found to be £2.77 – 5p up on last year.

The calculation for “real ale capital” is based on number of beers available, versus the population… and the news will be a bitter blow for near neighbours Sheffield – which is generally neck-and-neck with Derby every year for the title!
