British brewers should gear up for a 330 MILLION pint booze bonanza if the sun continues to shine this summer!
That’s the number of EXTRA beers that will be sold over a summer of sport and Jubilee fun, according to figures from Opinium Research.
Opinium says its research shows that 27 per cent of Britons – almost a third of the population – drink more alcohol when the weather gets warmer.
It says that additionally, 40 per cent of UK adults tend to drink at special occasions, such as weddings, which are held more often in the summer.
The company’s research team calculates that warmer weather sees the country consume an extra 333 million pints of beer and 67 million more litres of wine… which equates to Brits spending an additional £512m on beer and an extra £849m on wine.
In a move that will cheer the brewing industry, Opinium’s research says that only 6 per cent of Britons drink alcohol to get drunk – while some 26 per cent drink to compliment food, 21 per cent drink to relieve tension and relax, and 36 per cent simply like the taste!
Opinium ‘s head of healthcare research , Kate Norfolk said: “As summer approaches us, people want to enjoy the days getting longer and for some, that means having a nice glass of wine or pint of beer”.
