Young sailors have struck gold – thanks to a charity effort by a big-hearted Dorset brewery!
Palmers has decided to share its good fortune, since its Dorset Gold achieved cult status in the county.
Every pint or bottle of the 4.5 per cent golden ale that is sold, sees Palmers give 5p to the Chesil Trust – a local charity that enables young and disadvantaged people to enjoy the thrills of sailing.
In the last year sales of bottled and draught Dorset Gold have raised £7,430 for the charity – 30 per cent more than the year before!
Bottles of the ale are sold in the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, home of the Chesil Trust and part of the venue for the London 2012 Sailing events.
And when Prince Charles visited the sailing academy recently, Team GB sailors Ben Rhodes and Stevie Morrison persuaded him to launch their new boat by pouring a bottle of Dorset Gold over the bow.
Sales of Dorset Gold in bottles are up 33 percent on last year, as sales of all Palmers’ bottled beers went up by 20 per cent.
Cleeves Palmer, sales and marketing director at the Bridport-based brewery, said: “Palmers has a long history of raising money for good causes through beer sales, and has raised many thousands of pounds over the years.
“This year we are looking at a big handout to our selected charities.
“The weather hasn’t exactly been ‘gold’ so far this summer, but these figures show how important the bottled beer sector has become.”
