A Cumbrian brewer has joined forces with Fullers to create a new, all-English 6 per cent IPA, fittingly entitled The English Experiment.

experiment_240612Hardknott Brewery boss Dave Bailey teamed up with Fullers director John Keeling after the pair met at a British Guild of Beer Writers event.

The result is a new beer which uses four hops – taken straight from the development programme by Worcestershire hop growers Charles Faram.

Faram made Archer, Baron, Bishop and Landlady hops available in their first year of a very small commercial release.

John visited Dave’s Millom brewery to work out the brew in April – and the resultant ale went on sale with a special launch event in early June, at London’s Rake Bar.

Dave said: “To make a beer that both Fullers and Hardknott would be proud of, was the main objective.

“For it to comply with our objectives it had to be different, somehow. A contemporary spin on using all English ingredients seemed to be a good thing to do.

“The hops have been selected for their excellent brewing potential, with new flavours and aromas whilst still being recognisably English in their nature.”

The collaboration follows Hardknott’s earlier American experiment… Colonial Mayhem, which was a joint effort with US brew pub Brewers Union Local 180.
