Real ale fan Jeff Halliday has set up the world’s most remote micro-brewery, at his home… in the Falklands! Fifth-generation islander Jeff got a taste for real beer when he worked in the UK – and went home with the ambition of founding his own brewery. He returned to this country to complete two brewing courses run by BrewLabs… and has now set up making ale at Port Stanley! Already, Jeff has landed a regular supply contract with the local Malvina House Hotel and his first two brews – Maiden Bitter and Longdon Pride – are pouring onto a market traditionally made up of lager drinkers. The remoteness of his brewery also poses problems – he has to wait for up to three months for his ingredients! And when they arrive he pays a price premium, which has to be passed on to the customers. Nevertheless, Jeff is already planning a brewery expansion – taking his plant up to 2.5 barrels which will yield nine casks per brew.
