A town’s football club has teamed up with a local pub to stage a four-day beer festival showcasing more than 80 ales and ciders.

EvoStik Premier Division side Chorley, nicknamed the Magpies, will launch their Thirsty Magpie Beer Festival, at their Victory Park ground from July 12-15, in collaboration with the Spinners Arms pub at nearby Cowling.

A host of local bands have been signed up to provide music.

Magpies boss, former Man City and England under-21 star Garry Flitcroft, said: “This is the first time the club has staged a beer festival and it promises to be a great event.

“The lads at the Spinners have been working hard to source beers from breweries all over the north of England.

“We’ve also lined up a number of top bands from the area, who will play throughout the festival.” Tickets are available shortly from the club and pub.

Meanwhile over the Pennines in York, this year’s Beer and Cider Festival will be the biggest ever with some 250 beers and 100 ciders at the extended four-day event on the Knavesmire, from September 19-22.

The event marks the 800th anniversary of York being granted its city charter and several one-off commemorative ales are expected at the event.
