It was always on the cards… but York and Norwich are set to glug it out as the key contenders in the bid to be the UK Ale Capital.

York is planning to run a huge beer census on June 30 – aiming to prove that it boasts more different ales than any other city in the country.

But Norwich – which has just hosted a huge, citywide summer ale festival – plans to spike York’s guns, if not its drinks… by doing the same census on the same day!

The contest has set mayor against mayor and CAMRA against CAMRA in the two cities – with both claiming to be the tops for beer.

And the battle may not end there… traditional rivals for the City of Ale title, Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham have previously run their own censuses to proved that they are the UK’s ale capital!
