Yorkshire’s musical beer makers, the Revolutions Brewing Co, joined the global celebration of Record Store Day on Saturday (April 21) – by producing a special beer to mark the fifth such event.
The Day – an annual celebration of the independently-owned record shops – takes place on the third Saturday of every April. Special vinyl, CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day, and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances.
West Yorkshire’s Revolutions was introduced to the event by Leeds-based Jumbo Records, and the brewers – who base their ales on vinyl hits of the past – went straight to their mash tuns to produce Revolver, specially for the event.
Revolutions are famous for producing “turntable speed” brews of 3.3 and 4.5 per cent, to mirror the old 33s and 45s, and Revolver is a fitting “single” of the 45 ilk… a 4.5 per cent pale, hoppy ale!
The new ale – which shares its name with the famous Beatles LP – has been made available in cask and in bottles at selected venues around the UK. Confirmed outlets include London’s Rough Trade Records, and Rise Records in Bristol – where the ale will be available in cask, at in-house events.
It will also be available in the Bow Bar (Edinburgh), North Bar (Leeds), Brudenell Social Club (Leeds), Bacchus (Newcastle), Port Street & Common Bars (Manchester).
Bottles are also available wholesale from Beer Paradise and retail through Beer Ritz (Leeds & online), Bier Huis (Ossett & online) and Alexander Wines (Coventry).

Revolutions director Andrew Helm told Hand-Pumped: “We were so excited about being given the chance to brew a beer for Record Store Day, as we’re both passionate about independent music.
“Big thanks are due to Jumbo Records in Leeds for connecting us with the Record Store Day guys in the USA.
“Having the beer being sold at the iconic London record store Rough Trade is just fantastic.
“We’ll both be at Jumbo Records on Saturday in Leeds and afterwards at North Bar for a pint of Revolver!”
Record Store Day is managed from the States by the Music Monitor Network, with Spencer Hickman of London’s Rough Trade Records co-ordinating the UK events.
Among a huge list of global sponsors are EMI Distribution, Fontana Distribution, Sony Music, Universal Music Distribution, WEA Distribution, Warner Bros Records.
