Keep taking the Pils with Sharp’s

Sharp’s Brewery in Cornwall has ventured into the world of real lager – with a new 4.2 per cent offering, Spring Cask Pilsner.
The brew is Sharp’s interpretation of one of the world’s most popular beer styles and the recipe uses Pilsner malt, whole Saaz hops, and a bottom fermenting yeast.
The “clear, refreshing and satisfying” ale is lagered with English thyme in a cold maturation vessel before cask conditioning in the brewery cellar.
Sharp’s Head Brewer Stuart Howe says: “There were days when ale brewers would have been strung up for extolling the virtues of pilsner… but we live in enlightened times!
“Brewing a clean crisp beer has been an exciting challenge for a cask beer brewer. Adding thyme from the Eden Project during the maturation puts our innovative stamp on the brew.”
The ale is described as a pale straw beer with a herbal lemon aroma, crisp and light to the taste and with clean fruit notes, leaving a dry citrus linger. Ironically Sharp’s flagship brand Doom Bar was the official beer of the “doomed” 158th Boat Race last weekend!
The race was blighted by bad luck, and was halted when a swimmer strayed into the path of the boats as part of a protest. When it restarted, the Oxford team lost a blade in a serious clash of oars between the competing crews.
