A top labelling company says that nearly 40 per cent of micro-breweries need to change their beer labels, to avoid falling foul of new labelling code.
Mercian Labels says that currently, only 60 per cent are compliant with the move to encourage microbreweries to amend label content to comply with the Government’s new “Public Health Responsibility Deal”.
Full compliance is required by the end of next year.
Brewers have been asked to sign up to a total of nine “pledges” to conform to the Government’s current alcohol strategy.
The labelling strategy revolves around three “core pledges” giving information on alcohol unit content, alcohol and pregnancy, and sensible drinking guidelines.
Mercian sales director Hugo Gell said: “There has been a lot of progress already by UK breweries to include this important new information on alcohol use, but inevitably it places additional commercial pressures on already tight margins to redesign and print new labels”.
Mercian is offering a digital labelling process which it says can give a three-day turnaround from artwork approval to finished bottle labels, and without conventional printing plate charges.
The minimum order value is just £150.
