Rebellious brewers Brewdog have gotten so pumped up about the Olympics’ controversial fast-food sponsorship deals, that they’ve made an ale which could get athletes banned for doping.
In a defiant gesture against the strict Olympics commercial rules, the controversial brewery has launched its limited-edition “Never Mind The Anabolics” – a 6.5 per cent IPA that they claim is laced with substances banned for professional athletes.
The “performing enhancing” ingredients include creatine, guarana, lycii berries, kola nut, Gingko, matcha tea and maca powder – all of which can be legally sold to the public, although their consumption is outlawed for athletes.
A first batch of the brew is said to have also contained steroids.
Brewdog said it designed the beer to “undermine global sponsorship” for the London Olympics.
James Watt, Brewdog’s co-founder said: “It seems a beer laced with performance enhancing ingredients isn’t actually illegal, but it is definitely frowned upon”.
The company added: “It is about time the greatest sporting event on the planet was not sponsored by fast food companies, sugary fizzy drinks producers or monolithic multi-national brewers.
“A burger, can of fizzy pop and an industrial lager are not the most ideal preparation for the steeple chase or the dressage (for human or horse).
“Never Mind The Anabolics takes its lead from the relentless marketing campaigns of global fast food chains and international mass production breweries, that replace the sporting spirit with a fast buck, a greasy burger and an ugly plastic cup of insipid, fizzy, yellow lager.”
The beer is for sale on Brewdog’s online store and in its bars nationwide.
